Ana Maria at TFC

“Ana Maria” was featured the the Filipino Channel (TFC) as a special presentation at PhilFest 2012. Many thanks to Don Tagala for this and many thanks to Rhovi Ann Allado, Jeanette Pangilinan, Vic Omila, Rose Demille, James Jamo, Aga Villagomeza, Ann Bartlett, Catherine Alchivar and Evan Pangilinan for being such a wonderful team to work with.

“Ana Maria” was a first attempt to put up a Filipino sarzuela here in Tampa (and perhaps the whole of Tampa Bay Area). Written by Severino Reyes and music by ANtonio Molina, it has survived the ever changing Filipino culture, although these days it is confined to academic presentations. Hopefully, this kind of cultural genre will still have a niche in a world of computers and hiphop music!

A special project of the Philippine Cultural Foundation, Inc. (PCFI) in Tampa, the “Ana Maria” was chaired by Olivia Santiano and co-chaired by Dr. Patsy Abinales. It was shown at the Bayanihan Arts and Events Center’s Grand Sampaguita Hall on Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1, 2012.

Hopefully, we can show this musical play again soon. A lot of people were not able to see it during PhilFest because shows and entertainment were going on all at the same time in different venues. Those who were able to see it were really appreciative. Punchlines and jokes were returned with bursts of laughter, songs were showered with appreciative applause and we got standing ovations on both shows on Saturday and Sunday. There is nothing more satisfying to an artist than this kind of response.
