The UP Madrigal Singers or “Madz”, in short, was founded by Philipine National Artist Andrea Veneracion back in 1963 and has become one of the premiere choral ensembles in the Philippines. Consistently winning various prestigious competitions worldwide like Arezzo and Gorizia in Italy, Marktoberdorf in Germany, Spittal in Austria, Neuchatel in Switzerland, Tours in France, Varna in Bulgaria, Debrecen in Hungary, Cantonigros and Torrevieja in Spain among others, Madz has gained the reputation of being the most awarded choir in Asia . It also holds the distinction of being the first choir in the world to win the European Grand Prix of Choral Singing twice (1997 and 2007), 2009 UNESCO Artist for Peace and other honors. Madz is directed by Mark Anthony Carpio, a graduate of the University of the Philippines, sought-after choral clinician, consultant, workshop master and judge for choral events both locally and internationally.
Inviting Madz and other Filipino and Fil-Am artists to the Tampa Bay Area has been one of the outreach cultural programs of the Philippine Cultural Foundation, Inc. since its inception in 1995. With the completion of the Bayanihan Arts and Events Center in 2001, a considerable number of Fil-Am artists, both local and international, have come here to perform. The Madz concert is chaired by PCFI board member Olive Santiano and co-chaired by Nhick Ramiro Pacis, resident music director, with the support of the Philippine Choral Group.
Admission to the UP Madrigal Singers concert is $50.00. Seats are limited so seating is by reservation only.
